SQN SHOOT

On the 19th of June, Woodley squadron had a day of shooting from 9 until 3, many cadets who had only been trained on the air rifle the night before took their WHT's and passed with flying colours. At the beginning, cadets were shooting quite accurately, and as the day progressed groupings became smaller. Cdt Silvey's use of "the force" did not work to his advantage however, as he missed the target slightly on one of his shots. Everybody who shot had a great time and took one step closer to becoming a core marksman.

GLDING AT 612 VGS

On June19th I went gliding for the first time ever. It was the best experience ever my pilot was Ft Lt Rose he was really nice, he taught me how to pitch the nose up and down and what all the dials meant. There was four of us who went with me, Cdt Reid, Cpl Mcbrein and Cpl Spicer-Short, it was at Dalton Barracks in Abingdon. Overall it was a really good day.

BERKSHIRE CADET 150 PARADE

On Sunday the 9th of May cadets from Woodley, along with 150 other air, army and sea cadets from across Berkshire, took part in a parade in Windsor. The parade, complete with a marching band, started at Victoria Barracks, before travelling to Windsor Castle where a service was held at St Georges chapel. The event was one of many celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of the formation of the cadet movement and it was attended by numerous VIPs. It was a very enjoyable day for all those who went.

MOVIE NIGHT

On Friday the 7th of May we had a movie night at our squadron which almost every cadet attended, all wearing civvies. Many people brought snacks (mostly sweets) and to watch the film we got a projector, rented ‘Avatar’ and set all the chairs out cinema style. Half way through the film our pizza arrived with many different toppings. We then had lots of ice cream which we ate with forks! Everyone had a great night and very much enjoyed the film whether they had seen it or not.

612 VGS

On the 22nd of May 2010, Cdt Reid, Cpl Spicer-Short, Cpl McBrien and I went gliding at Dolton Barracks Abingdon. Everyone except Cpl Spicey got to fly almost as soon as they arrived, but it took almost 4 hours before she got to glide. The day wasn't ruined though as we just sunbathed and did about 5 minutes of coursework/revision, everyone enjoyed the gliding experience and topping up their tan.

EASTER CAMP

FS Brooks and Cpl Jenkins attended an Easter camp at RAF High Wycombe. Although the programme looked a bit sparse before we got there, the CO, (also the camp commandant) organised a really busy week. We did everything from try flying a Chinook simulator at RAF Benson, to even getting a Chinook flight at RAF Odiham! We managed to visit about 5 different RAF stations that week, so we were all pretty knackered by the time we made it home. Everyone siad it was one of the best camps they'd ever been on, especially after the 30 something boxes of pizza we managed to eat on the last night!!

EXE JOINT ACTION

From the 27th to 28th of March 2010, 25 cadets from Woodley, Earley and Wokingham squadrons congregated bright and early at Bramshill training area for a fun-filled weekend. With heavy bags, the cadets struggled to the camp, completing small missions on the way. After setting up camp in the subsiding rain, we were split into two flights, and sent off to do an observation exercise. At first we were rubbish, but after some practise our concealment and tactical skills improved dramatically. This set us up nicely for the night exercise, which involved attempting to steal a bomb from a "sleeping" guard, getting information from a Braminski barber with a very believeable Scottish accent and throwing pinecones on Flt Sgt Sherfield's grenade range. The night exercise was a sucess and by the time we got back to camp at about 2 in the morning everybody was falling asleep. Unfortunately the next moring some cadets got up too early and woke people up with their loud talking, which got us a stern talking to. After the cadets had learnt their lesson, we packed up the camp and proceeded with some short exercises, including a reconaissance mission which involved walkingpast a lot of worringly large ant hills and builing a prison out of branches. The weekend was a great success and taught many new cadets skills for future exercises.

SQN AIR RIFLE SHOOT

On Wednesday the 24th of March the squadron held an evening to allow cadets to practice their accuracy with the air rifles. Cpl Spicer-Short, Cpl Jenkins, Cdt Ried, Cdt Makinde, Cdt Parker, Cdt Rodgers and Cdt Reeves all attended with Cadets Rodgers and Reeves shooting for their first time having passed their weapons handling tests just weeks before. Most cadets started the evening as fairly good shots with many improving over the course of the evening. Everyone shot safely and thoroughly enjoyed themselves with several cadets quickly signing up for the next practice.

HELPING READING ROAD RUNNERS

On the 15th of February 2010, roughly 20 cadets went to Bramley to hand out water and "Hi5" energy drinks for all the competitors running their last race before the London Marathon. After an evening training for the passing of the drinks, all the cadets were extremely proficient, and were split up around the circuit. Cdt Smith-Uchotski collected about 1000 dropped plastic cups which were dropped all the way down the road so deserves a special mention. The highlight of the day was a bald man running past who demanded water to be thrown over him and got more than he bargained for when more than 20 cups of water were thrown over him. Everybody who came enjoyed helping out and got a bag of goodies including a Bramley 2010 bum-bag and a tiny can of deoderant.

SQUADRON BOWLING AND LASER QUEST

On the 4th December cadets from 1116 Woodley squadron travelled to the big apple in Wokingham for a fun filled evening of bowling and laser quest. The staff were competitive, but not good enough to beat Cadet Ingram! We then got our shoes back, donned our Laser Quest suits and were briefed on how to play. Again the staff were beaten by a cadet Derbyshire, who came 1st in our group and 3rd over the whole day. It was an extremely fun night and it was enjoyed by all who went.

INTER-FLIGHT SHOOTING COMPETITION

On the 14th December Woodley squadron held an inter-flight air rifle shooting competition. 1 flight was represented by Cdt Reid and Cdt Brooks, and 2 flight were represented by Cdt Spicer-Short and Cdt Makinde. Overall the winners were 1 flight; Cdt Reid was the individual winner. It was great fun for all those involved.

WING BOWLING

Following the Squadron bowling evening, on the 6th December Woodley cadets competed at Wing bowling at RAF Brize Norton. We entered a boys and a girls team and both bowled really well, but after a stiff contest the girls beat the boys. After two rounds the girls made it through to the final, finishing in an incredible 2nd place overall. In addition, congratulations to Sgt Som who came 2nd for the individual girls score competition.

1116 WOODLEY SQN AWARDS EVENING

This was the first Annual Squadron Awards Dinner to be held at the Wokingham Masonic Centre on Saturday 21st November. The purpose of the evening was for the CO of 1116 to give a presentation and to hand out awards and to tell parents how well the cadets are doing. Altogether there were a lot of people there, 13 cadets who bought parents, the staff of 1116 Woodley were there as well as wing staff. By the end of the evening everyone had enjoyed themselves and wanted to do it again next year.

 EXERCISE EVERSLEY CROWN

On the 28th of November 1116 cadets met at Bramshill early in the morning at the car park ready to embark on a tough, but fun weekend. Both teams completed the exercises well and we proceeded to have a photograph. Even though the rain was continuous and the temperature was freezing we still managed to brave the weekend. All in all it was a good weekend exercise and I would definitely recommend it to any other cadets, but most importantly everyone enjoyed themselves.

Cdt Divatia

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY

Woodley Sqn attend this event every year and this year we went to the St John Church in Woodley on 8th November. The cadets formed a Guard of Honor while people came into the Church in the morning and on the way out. FS Brooks read out a passage and four cadets placed poppy wreaths on graves.  We also all enjoyed biscuits and tea after the service. It was an important event for the Air Cadets to represent and we were all proud to be there.

WING (27th SEP) AND REGIONAL (4th OCT) DRILL COMPETITIONS

On Sunday 27th September fifteen cadets went to St George’s Barracks to compete in the Wing Drill Competition. We were up first for the main drill sequence once we’d been inspected. The squad was taken by Sgt Som. We got good praise for our execution of drill movements, especially the ‘change step.’ We also competed in the continuity drill and five cadets did the banner drill. Overall we came 1st for the main drill sequence, 2nd for Continuity Drill and 3rd for Banner Drill which meant we went to the regional drill competition. It was a good fun day, and I would do it again.

For winning Wing Drill competition we went through to regional which was held on Sunday 4th October at RAF Lyneham and this meant extra time spent on uniform and another early morning. Then we had our chance to complete our drill sequence which was a lot scarier than wing, but everyone did their best and we came second overall which was amazing.

SQN HALLOWEEN PARTY

Woodley Sqn held its annual Halloween party on 30th October this year. All cadets came in fantastic fancy dress making it a very colourful event. The evening was packed with activities and included some very competitive Musical Chairs, dares from a balloon and a dance-off between three Michael Jacksons! It was a brilliant evening and we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly as usual.

Sgt Som

GLIDING AT 612 VGS

On the 25th July cadets from 1116 Woodley squadron travelled to RAF Abingdon to take part in a mornings gliding at Dalton Barracks. We arrived at Abingdon early, where Cdt Reid, Cdt Patterson and Cdt McBrien joined other cadets from Reading squadron. After the thorough brief, we marshalled the planes out to the runway. Even with the low cloud base, we were fortunate enough to have two flights each. We all thoroughly enjoyed it and it was a great day out.

Cdt McBrien

Congratulations to Sgt Boulton for being the first person on the 1116 AR range to gain a Squadron Marksman!

Congratulations to FS Brooks for being nominated for Lord Lieutenant's Cadet!

Wing Challenge- Saturday 4th to Sunday 5th July 2009

Wing challenge was held at Bramley and on the Saturday we did a night exercise and on the Sunday round robins,.The night exercise consisted of being given co-ordinates to places around bramley, and at those places we were given tasks to do which were like decoding passages of words, finding information about aircrafts, as well as team work and staying clear of the enemies. On the Sunday we did round robins and, that consisted of orienteering for 2 hours at the start, then we had to go to different stations to do things like first aid, judging distances, and leadership exercises. i really enjoyed wing challenge, as it was great fun and would definitely recommend it for people next year. Woodley Sqn came 3rd overall.

Major Generals Review- Sunday 31st May 2009

We all travelled down to London dressed in smart dress. Woodley took a fair few cadets and we saw Wokingham cadets and staff on the way. When we got to London we had a walk through London to get to the stands where the parade would take place. The soldiers we saw on parade looked very smart, their marching was pristinely in time and we even saw one man getting marched off my a very angry looking officer! After this we went off to get a nice MacDonald’s and jumped on the train and came home again. All in all it was a very enjoyable day out and well worth going, recommended for all in the coming years!

Wing Athletics- Sunday 4th May 2009

We arrived at Tisley Park in Abbingdon at around 8.30 -9.00. It was packed with cadets from other sqns. We spent the whole day there and had loads of fun. I think we did extremely well and deserved every trophy. We won the overall boys, Girls came 2nd overall and 1116 WOODLEY SQUADRON won the wing athletics.

Exe Warren Heath was an overnight exercise held in Bramshill Plantation with cadets in attendance from Woodley, Earley, Aldermaston and Reading squadrons. All the cadets got to experience camping and cooking outdoors, a first for many. The weekend was a flurry of activity in order to achieve our mission of recovering the downed airman and his specialist equipment. The 37 cadets in attendance were split into 3 sections, regiment, first aid and ground defence. Those in the first aid section were given training on the Friday night and then got a chance to put their new skills into practice on the Saturday. The regiment section located the downed airman and equipment on the Friday, as well as providing well needed protection for the first aid section from the enemy on Saturday. The ground defence section had the important task of maintaining security at the forward operating base where the exercise was coordinated from with the aid of radios and transport. The exercise was broken down into two phases; the first on Friday night involved the recce and training, while the second on Saturday involved the recovery of the airman and equipment to the forward operating base across a leadership course. The weekend was a definite success with training being provided on all levels and everyone having a great time, working with new people and learning new skills."

RAFA

At the R.A.F appeal day in Woodley precinct on the 20th of September we raised lots of money. I would recommend coming to the next one because it gets you out of the house and helps raise money for good causes. It only takes a few hours of your time and you get to see your friends from squadron whilst having fun and showing the public that teenagers can be smart, polite and sensible.

Exe Callsign

On Friday 5th September, some of the cadets in the sqn went to Bramshill for the weekend exercise. When we got there, it was throwing it down with rain, but we managed to put up our tents and make a fire. We also made some bivvies and were split into 3 groups. Two of the groups mapped the area and went to find Monica and the other group stayed at the camp and collected wood for the fire. After the groups came back, we ate some hotdogs and went to sleep. We also made a rota so that everyone would get up for an hour to keep the fire going and it worked! The next morning after breakfast and CAM'd oursleves with CAM cream and leaves and then went to find Monica or help make the obstacle course. When Monica was recovered, we had to bring her back to the obstacle course and watch for enemy (Sgt Tucker!) The course was challenging but fun. After this there was lunch and then we cleaned up the camp and loaded the coaches with our kit. Although it was tiring and I could't wait to have a shower, it was a really good weekend and I would definitly go again.

Regional Drill Competition

Yet another early start for Woodley as they set off for RAF Lynham to represent Thames Valley Wing at the regional drill competition. After getting changed we headed off into the drill hanger to be inspected and to carry out the drill sequence. We went off to get some lunch then for the final parade and awards ceremony. Over all Thames Valley came 3rd with Flight Sergeant Mayne coming 2nd with best Drill NCO. Winners of the day were Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wing. Well done Woodley!!!

Cdt Hawthorne

Wing Activities Day

WAD was great fun for new cadets to see what you can do at an RAF station. Different sqns were in different groups and did various challenges such as WHTs, a quiz, aircraft recognition etc. We trained endlessly to win the drill comp this year and our hard work paid off as we gained 1st place in the wing and Flt Sgt Mayne was 2nd for best drill NCO. We also came overall 2nd in our groups gaining two shiny trophies altogether so we did very well.

BROWNDOWN

This year, Browndown took place from 23rd-31st. It included events such as go-karting, a visit to HMS Victory (Nelson's flag ship), cycling in the New Forest and of course, the end of camp drill comp. The cadets who attended were Sgt Cooper and Cpl Boulton.

Sgt Cooper

SUMMER CAMP!

(RAF Wittering)- From the 16th -23rd Flt Sgt Mayne, Sgt Palazzo, Sgt Brooks, Sgt Cooper, Cdt Mayne and Cdt Patey went to RAF Wittering for the annual summer camp. The camp included visits to various parts of the station and its different sections such as the local Harrier Sqn and 2MT (military transport). During the visit to the Harriers, everyone got the chance to sit in the cokpit and see from the pilot's point of view. There was a visit to another station RAF Cottesmore which is the HQ of the front line Harrier sqns as the sqn at Wittering is a training sqn. Other activities included shooting, flying and leadership exercises. Probably the most exciting event was the night exe set up by the on base staff which involved the capture of glowsticks from other teams. Overall it was a good camp with Sgt Brooks winning best NCO and Cpl Cooper winning best overall cadet and Cdt Patey just missing out on best newcomer.

Sgt Cooper

Congratulations to Sgt Cooper on his promotion!

Nijmegen

From the 11th-19th Cpl Cooper participated in the annual Nijmegen marches in Holland. This involved walking a total of 100 miles in 4 days. He is the only one on the sqn for a long time to do this so congratulations to him

14/7/08- Congratulations to Cdt Makinde and Cdt Maher for being enrolled! Welcome to the squadron!

Wing Challenge

28th -29th June Wing challenge is a weekend at MoD training area Bramley. This year it was held on Saturday 28th - Sunday 29th June. The people who went are Sgt Brooks (1st IC), Sgt Palazzo (2nd IC), Cpl Boulton, Cpl Scrivener, Cpl Blumenthal, Cpl Som, Cdt Mayne and Cdt Patey. On day one you set up sleeping areas (Bivvies) and prepare yourselves for the night exe. And day two is made up of a round robin of exercises. Some of these exercises include communication exercise (that we excelled at), first aid, leadership exercises, orienteering, and Cdts Patey and Mayne also got an amazing opportunity to do the high ropes course at Bramley. Although many people and squadrons that went will say its the taking part that counts, it is always nice to see 1116 (Woodley) Sqn WINNING! We were closely followed by Burghfield Sqn (by 6 points). Congratulations to everyone who took part and of course to the squadron staff who prepared us thoroughly for the weekend.

Cpl Scrivener (II Flt)

20/5/08- Congratulations to Sgt Brooks and Cdt Som for passing their Senior Examinations!

12/5/08- Congratulations to Sgt Brooks and Flt Sgt Mayne on their promotions! And Happy Birthday to Flt Sgt Mayne who got treated by being soaked with a bucket of water!

Shooting RAF Benson

7/6/08 We arrived early at the squadron. Sgt Brooks, Cpl Scrivener, Cdt Blumenthal, Cdt Adams all travelled from the squadron to RAF Benson. Once got there we got a brief from the RCO for the day- WO Lambert. Then all the Woodley and most of the Wokingham cadets went off with Flt Sgt Sherfield to start the training on the L98. We trained up to lunch. Unfortunately we didn’t finish but we did do a lot of the training. Just before lunch Cpl Cooper, Cdt Thorne and Cdt Hawthorne joined us after AEF. Cpl Cooper shot the L98 and the others got a WHT on the .22. Everyone from Woodley (except Cpl Cooper as he was busy with the L98) then shot the .22. Everyone enjoyed the day and it is highly recommended to attend next time it comes up!

Wing Young Lifesaver Plus Course

9th to 11th May ‘08 The course took place from Friday to Sunday and Cdt Som and Flt Sgt Mayne attended from 1116. Saturday, we went to the ADF Block where we learnt about how to treat several injuries which were explained on PowerPoints and we learnt how to do a Secondary Assessment which is one level up from HeartStart. Other practicals involved were CPR, DRAB, and bandaging arms, legs, heads and objects sticking out from the skin! Saturday night involved some revision time, free time and showering time and on Sunday, the YLS Course (and Radio Course who were also using RAF Halton for the same weekend) had their assessments. There were some practise assessments which were highly entertaining with fake blood and wounds and everyone passed the real assessment. We were given a red badge for our brassards. This course is something I would really recommend going on as it gains you a qualification at the end and it’s just really fun to be on as you meet many other cadets from the Wing as well!

Wing Athletics

4th May ‘08 Another fairly early start for 1116 Woodley Squadron as the athletes arrived at 0800 hrs. The journey took about an hour to get to Abingdon, but as always Sgt. Palazzo and Cpl. Cooper didn’t let anyone rest because they had the whole bus chanting all the way until we got there. Everyone who participated did extremely well as 1116 collected handfuls of medals from their heats and finals. Special congratulations to the girls as they took part in the events with just 3 cadets but still came 3rd in the girls category overall! All that went enjoyed the day, especially with the success, and the boys won overall in category B! Congratulations to everyone who took part in Wing Athletics and hopefully next year we can do even better. Numbers = Trophies!

Leadership Exercise

8th April ‘08 On 18th April we all took part in some leadership exercises in our flights. For the first half, the Sergeants set us a bridge crossing challenge using various bits of equipment, some methods being more successful than others. Several trips had to be made in both directions by both flights, due to the number of people who came into contact with the shark infested custard! After canteen we did another exercise, run by the Adult staff. Everyone was blindfolded, and had to simultaneously hold on to each other, and to a rope, whilst completing an obstacle course. This was challenging to say the least, especially when we encountered a river which we had to construct a bridge over in order to cross. Everyone did very well, especially the two who were in the front of their flights, who had a lot of ...fun... discovering where the water was!

Cpl Brooks (I Flt)

11/4/08- Congratulations to Cdt Hawthorne, Cdt Mayne, Cdt Turner and Cdt Som for passing their Leading Examinations! Projects- First Quarter The first set of projects have finally been competed! Tables and benches have all been painted and varnished, so now we are moving onto the next set of projects: 1 flight are in charge of the squadron knot board and. The knot board will explain the different types of knots that can be used for team activities and exercises and show how to put them into practise. 2 flight are in charge of rifle renovation and ‘How To’ videos. These videos will be downloadable on the 1116 website and inform cadets on how to do various tasks such as shoe polishing and ironing their uniform. Well done for finishing the last projects and the next projects will probably be just as successful!

Sqn Night Exercise

28th March 08 The Corporals were set the challenge of running a night exercise. Cpl Brooks, Cpl Cooper and myself met beforehand in Dinton Pastures to work out the bearings and locations etc. The tasks included a first aid challenge, recovering the first IC from the enemy and an OP exercise where the cadets had to observe staff activities and follow them. Overall the night went well; the cadets did most of the tasks well, with the exception of when flight one abused their casualty slightly during the first aid task…! Well done to both flights, but special congratulations to flight two who won 50 flight points overall for doing the best over the course of the night.

DCAE Cosford 2 day march 2008

Our day began on the Saturday with a brisk rise at 4am. Breakfast was quickly followed at 5am. We then had just 1 hour to get ready for the day’s marching, as form up was at 6am and the first team left at 6:20am. Saturday: The distance to the first rest camp was a long 13km to a church. At the rest stops the cadets and civilians could have something to eat, fill up on water and check your feet for any problems. The rest stops were only approx. 5 minutes long as we were eager to set off. The 2nd stop was 9km away in a field. Finally the 3rd rest stop was another 9km away at a local community centre. Then it was the final 9 km leg back to base. At base we all set off to take their feet out of the boots and hit the showers, even though the hot water wasn’t turned on. Lights out was whenever the cadets felt like it but it was another early start. Sunday: The second day began with get up at 4, breakfast at 5 and leave at 6:20. Because we walked 1 km extra the day before we only had to walk 39km on Sunday. The rest camps were approx. the same distance. 13km, 9km, 8km, 9km, finish. This time however the route took us on a large circle as rest stop 1 was also rest stop 3 as we doubled back on ourselves. When we arrived back at base we marched onto the parade square where the teams who had finished before us cheered and clapped us in. we where then dismissed and went to receive our medals from Flt Lt Kisley who was our senior officer. It is a very mentally and physically exhausting, but in the end it was worth it. To stand there and receive your medal after all the hard work you have put in is a great feeling.

Community Day

On the 15th March, 9 Woodley cadets helped out at the Community Day. We spent a few hours helping to litter-pick and move literally tonnes of rubbish – everything from flowerpots to spent fireworks to a microwave! After a quick break, we set up the gazebo and successfully recruited a couple of new cadets. 5 boys played in the football tournament, losing miserably to some policemen, but thrashing some kids half their size. After some drinks and food from the WI stand, most of us then went on to have a go at tug of war. Unfortunately we were beaten by some local teenagers, who were in turn beaten by the army team! Overall it was a great day, it didn’t rain (much) and we got some new freebies for the sqn!

Banner Drill 1st March 08

Once we had finished the continuity drill competition the five of us in the banner drill team headed for the hall. The banner drill team consisted of Cadet Dempsey (Banner Bearer) Sergeant Palazzo (Banner WO), Corporal Cooper, Corporal Scrivener (Banner Escorts), and Cadet Mayne (Banner Orderly). Over all the competition went well with only a few mistakes. We came second, closely behind 2403 (Aldermaston) Squadron. This good performance means that the team are not parading out Squadron banner at Wing Review along with 211 (Newbury) and 2121 (Abingdon) Squadrons and 2403 (Aldermaston) Squadron will be parading the wing banner as they won the competition. Congratulations to 1116 Banner Team!

Continuity Drill Competition 1st March 08

We put in a team for the continuity drill competition on the 1st March. The team consisted of 9 people, Sgt Palazzo, Sgt Mayne, Cpl Cooper Cpl Brooks, Cpl Scrivener, Cdt Hawthorne, Cdt Mayne, Cdt Dempsey and Cdt Som. Everyone arrived at the squadron an hour early to get some practice in, and our ONLY practice at the Banner drill. Over all the day went well, we didn’t make any major mistakes, however some people could have LISTENED to the beat a little bit better… We came 2nd over all, with 211 (Newbury) Sqn coming closely ahead of us. It was a great performance by all and a good day out meeting lots of new people from other squadrons.

Henley Shoot  18th February 08

Cpl Cooper, Cpl Brooks, Cdt Wickendon, Cdt Demspey, Cdt Blumenthal and Cdt Som went to 447 (Henley) Squadron for a night of shooting at their range. We were joined by 3 cadets from Henley as well. We shot in groups of threes and the practises done were 10 rounds Deliberate and 10 rounds Snap for which we were given quite a generous time as it was most people’s first attempts at this practise. When not shooting, the Henley cadets went back to their lessons and the Woodley cadets waited outside in the main hall and alternated between playing with a small basketball a rugby ball and a Vortex, which was fun too. Finally after cleaning the rifles, we headed home after a successful night of shooting.

Nowell Cup Selection 9th February 08

On the 9th February, Cpl Brooks, Cpl Boulton and Cdt Dempsey went to the Nowell cup selection day at Brock Barracks (Reading sqn). We fired two details of 10 rounds, and then the Wing Shooting Officer calculated our scores. Cpl Brooks was then lucky enough to get a third attempt which resulted in a Wing Marksman! Cdt Dempsey then managed to get both region marksman and Runner-up best male shot, as well as selection to represent the inter-services team in the Nowell cup on the 2nd March, along with 5 Wokingham cadets.

ATC Sunday 3rd February 08

At this event, all squadrons from the Central Area of Thames Valley Wing were present to attended a parade. There was a practise parade to begin with which ensured that all of the cadets and officers knew what to do for the real parade. After the practise parade, there was a break to let the cadets warm up before going outside again to face the freezing conditions for the next 10 minutes. However, the final event of the day was the most enjoyable as the cadets (and staff) were allowed to eat cakes and biscuits which had been provided very kindly by two staff from Reading Squadron. After this the cadets were dismissed and sent home.

Friday 21st December Xmas party at Henley squadron

Woodley squadron had a brilliant Xmas party on Monday 21st December and they were further spoilt with another one at Henley squadron later on in the week. Both squadrons were dressed in formal clothing and mingled at the start of the evening and sat at the tables in the hall for freshly cooked food, where there was an interesting debate whether the soup was swede and coriander or pumpkin. After the meal, Squadron leader Travena gave a speech on this year’s achievements and next years forthcoming events. When the tables and chairs in the hall were cleared they received secret Santa gifts where 90% knew who got their gifts likewise with Henley squadron. The evening ended at approximately 2330 whilst a majority stayed the night and woke up at 0800ish for breakfast which saved their parents having to collect them late at night!

Squadron Christmas Party

We all arrived at 7.15 in our different costumes. When we went into the building we set up the chairs in two flights facing each other. We then went round the room and explained our costumes to the rest of the squadron. Then prizes were given out, best costume, worst costume, best act and finally best couple. Once this had been done we played some games, such as musical chairs, fluffy bunny, etc. We then broke off for an extended canteen and when we came back broke of into small groups for some sods opera. With the most notable one being Sgt Mayne, Cpl Grewl, Cpl Boulton, Cdt Brooks, Cdt Wickendon and Cdt Som with their on squadron dating service. We then cleared up and went home.

Exe Dolphin.

We arrived at the sqn on a cold Friday Evening at 7pm. The first thing that was needed was to check that everyone had a brew kit (not everyone did). At about 19.20 we went into the building for a safety and SMEAC brief by Sgt Sherfied. About 19.40 we split into two sections (working as one team) and left the building with the kit for where the mission was to start. Our first Mission was to locate the Dolphin's (we had a grid reference). Once we had found our way to the place where the Dolphin's were stranded. Once there the two sections had to make a stretcher out of the two logs and rope we had been given (and any other pieces of personal equipment). We then had to make our way to the release point (we had also been given a grid reference for this point). While we were doing this we had to keep the dolphins constantly wet using the water barrels we had been given back at the squadron. On top of that we also has to find a place to let the Dolphins' have a quick swim every ten minutes. At each stage of our mission we had to be as stealthy as possible because there were members of staff out to slow us down and even prevent us from completing he mission.

Exercise Team Strength

We arrived at Bramley on Friday night, and me and Som were immediately taken off to join CWO Uzell, Sgt Paul and Sgt O’Neil from Wokingham sqn as part of a special forces section. We were dropped off without ration packs, and given a grid reference to find them. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to find them that night, so at about 1am we set up our bivvys and started sleeping/sentry duty. This meant we only got 3 hours of sleep, as we had to get up at around 5:30 am to go and find our ration packs. When we eventually found them we were pretty hungry! Our section spent all day tracking the cadets from the other sections in Training Area C, and till about 11pm tracking them in Training Area B, before heading back to our harbour area and setting up our bivvys and starting sentry duty again, as well as getting another 4 hours or so of sleep! The other sections had spent Saturday doing various other greens exercises and also had a good time. At around 6am Sunday morning we got up and ready to be picked up by the staff and went back for a much needed warm breakfast and chairs to sit down on! All of the sections spent Sunday doing round robin activities which were really fun. Afterwards everyone I spoke to said that they had a really good time and hoped to come again next year!

Open Evening

In September we had our annual Open Evening, which is an opportunity for our friends and family to come down and see what we get up to at cadets. The evening started with a committee AGM for the parents, while the cadets made their final preparations. During the evening, there was a demonstration from the drill team, which doubled as a dress rehearsal for the Wing Drill Competition that weekend. There were also presentations by various cadets and NCOs on Camps Gliding/Flying Why you should join the ATC Greens We were also visited by Wing Commander Green, who gave out a lot of awards, including Best NCO of the year and cadet of the Year. Some new cadets were also enrolled. The evening finished with a raffle, which helped to raise funds for the squadron. Well done to everyone who helped prepare for Open Evening, well done to everyone who won an award and Thankyou to everyone who came!

Regional Drill Competition

At around 8.00am we left sqn in smart civvies, after about 2 hours we arrived at RAF Lyneham. We checked in and went off to change into our uniform. We had about 10 minutes to practice before we were to march out onto the parade square. Fortunately Sgt Dempsey didn't have to fight to much over the sound of the Hercules (as the parade square is right next to the manoeuvring area of the base). As far as our performance went everyone did most things well, with some mistakes. Then for the results... Sgt Dempsey did extremely well with giving the drill coming 3rd out of the whole region, CONGRATULATIONS Sgt!! and 1116 (Woodley) Sqn also came 3rd out of the whole region CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who took part!!!

A big thanks once again goes to the CO for the transport to and from RAF Lyneham, also to all the staff members who have been working hard on assisting us to get our drill and uniform to this standard. Also thanks to Cdt Zatts for coming as she left on Monday. Once again congratulations to Sgt Dempsey as he didn't have very much time to learn the drill routine.

Wing Activities Day - 23rd September 2007

We started off with a very early start, 7.00am at The Squadron! When the mini bus got there we all slowly climbed in still half asleep. The journey there was bad as all we wanted to do was fall asleep but no-one wanted to crease their uniform. As we got there we checked ourselves in. The day on the whole was worth the early get up as it was a very exciting and fun day for all. Activities included a quiz on the ATC and aviation, Aircraft Recognition ('we were incredible at this'), a leadership exercise, first aid, DRILL, map reading exercise and many, many more. Unfortunately we were the second to last to do our drill so our shirts were creased, trousers had lost the crease and shoes had been scuffed, this didn't matter though as we are 1116 (Woodley) Squadron we can pull anything out of the bag. Our drill was excellent, we worked well as a team and we pulled it all off in the end and won!!!! An extra big congratulations to Cadet Mayne and Cadet Collins who haven't even got their first class and are just about to be placed into a regional drill competition WELL DONE YOU TWO!!!!!!!!! Thanks to Ma'am for the driving there and a big thanks to WO Twigg, Sgt Sherfield and Sgt Tucker for getting us 100% ready for the drill competition and also for the high standards that they expect from us that enabled us to win. CWO Sach should also get a huge congratulations as she got the best Drill NCO!

Exercise: Ice tea

Three teams were given forty minutes to explore Dinton at night inconspicuously as the staff could have captured the cadets. They had to report to Sergeant Steer afterwards (this put their timings and observation skills to the test) and inform him what they saw; he devised a map out of sticks and bottles and when the map was completed it gave the cadets a clear understanding of the layout as all their observations had been collaborated.

Editorial: This is one of the most exciting and challenging exercises I’ve done with cadets. Near the end of the evening my group had to capture a couple of senior cadets and they were willing to resist being captured so they fell in a wet marsh. I hoped they learnt their lesson. Why it is called ‘Exercise: Ice tea’ we shall not know.

Browndown

Browndown was a great camp and provided a lot of fun, exciting and
educational activities, we did a lot in the two weeks that CDT Collins, Cpl
Cooper and CDT Zats was there for. The activities consisted of: shooting,
swimming, bowling, museum trips, night exercises, cycling, shooting again,
heart start and so on and so forth.. there are to many to simply state plus
go-karting which was free since we went for two weeks and also the D of E
award. The accommodation was nice and we had great food all for £100.00
which is very cheap. We had some spare time to do our own thing at nights
like go to the beach and shops. We all had great fun and will all miss the
friends we made at brown down (except the Bracknell lot : ).

Cdt Collins

Exercise turtle

This exercise was that we have lost the war and we had to be the rear line
defence to allow your retreating troops to escape, but it wasn't a walk in
the park since we had to defend these troops from 3 rather strong staff. We
had 5 points to defend and we tried are best but due to lack in numbers we
lost every time, but we worked well as a team and some new cadets learnt a
lot, plus we all had fun!

Wing Challenge 2007

We arrived in high spirits even though the weather was not on our side. As soon as we had made the long march down to site A, we all gathered into the hanger for our briefing for the weekend with the ‘Gorgeous one’ AWO Lambert giving the intro. Afterwards we were given our 24-hour ration pacts and set up camp in the short time the rain had stopped. After the 1st ICs had had their briefing we set out on our day exe to locate agents with details about our night exe. Woodley (being the best we are) gathered all 7 clues in the torrential rain and were confident about the success of the night exe. We then settled down to eat our dinner, as we were half an hour early from end exe. The menus were all different depending on what ration box you got. In the night exe we were again looking for agents in the rain, and told to gather some more info. Unfortunately along the way Sgt Parfett, after being jumped by the staff, became ill and was forced to retire from the event. Woodley again gathered all clues despite loosing our map-reader. That night the girls wimped out and slept inside while the males braved the cold, the wet and the slugs to make it through the night. In the morning the staff decided to be nice to the cadets (for once) and put all the days activities in the shelter of the buildings and hangers. But unfortunately Woodley Sqn were about to have another draw back when Cdt Jones also became ill and had to retire as well after having survived the night The winners of the weekend was Bracknell Sqn A team which comprised of all NCOs. Woodley came 9th over all out of approx. 30 other Sqns which means we are in the top 1/3rd of the wing. Well done!

Sunday 24th June

Shooting at otmoor! we really have to get more people to go! I managed to get my WHT in the L98 and go shooting at the butts, it would be wonderful if there is a large group of us going instead of just me.

The Longest Day Flying at 612VGS

82 cadets camped over on Friday night at Dalton Barracks, and 7 cadets from 1116.

After a quick something to eat it was time for sleep for the early start. At 0300 hours everyone was woken to the sound of the bagpipes playing Scotland the Brave. Must of been requested by Flt Lt Dempsey. It was still dark, but everyone was busy getting out of tents, and at 0442 hours the first Vigilant Glider left the Airfield followed by 5 other gliders it was quiet a sight with the sun rising and the smell of breakfast being cooked.

BBC Oxford radio came to talk to some of the cadets and Staff, and Flt Lt Dempsey had his moment of being a star on the radio. All the Cadets where in good spirits whilst waiting there turn to fly, and by 11:30am, everyone had got a flight I would like to say thank you, to my cadets for taking part, and yes you have all got points towards the Best Cadet Award.

FACT BY THE END OF THE DAY 235 CADETS HAD BEEN FLOWN Well done to all the Staff at 612VGS.

Cpl Cooper will be meeting Prince Andrew (Duke of York)!!

April 2007

1116 Woodley Squadron were privileged enough to have a visit from the Mayor of Wokingham, Cllr Angus Ross. He observed how we ran as a unit, and shared some very interesting stories from his older RAF memories. He also kindly donated a book about the 'History of the RAF', which will be a very nice addition to the sqn. Some cadets took a great interest in reading the Mayors RAF log books.

After the visit, we were provided with such positive feedback about our sqn, the staff and cadets that are part of it. Thumbs up everyone!

Cpl Mayne and Sgt Adams, both got Btec's in Aviation studies

The last 7 weeks

Hello people I have almost finished my adventuring!!! For the last 7 weeks I have been here there and everywhere! So let’s start at the very beginning! RIAT... this year I was at RIAT on the SWAT team. It was really good fun, I would suggest it to anyone, its hard work but a lot of fun at the same time. RAF Benson... for those who do not know I’m looking at a career in the RAF as engineering officer so for more background I decided to do 2 weeks of work experience, I organised it my self so if people would like details then just ask and I will be happy to give them to you. Senny!!! Defiantly want to go next year, coz this year I sprained my ankle on the Monday which a visit to the hospital kind of helped but most of the stuff I had to sit out. However I would suggest that everyone should go next year. Meeting lots of new people was one of the best things about it!! So now my travels are nearing to an end I have brought back experiences that I can share and hope to do a lot of it next year as well.

22 to 20/July/2006 - Camp - RAF Henlow - The Best Bits:

matty and betz and me matt dunkin awo twigg great fun got to go next year

It was all awesome, hard to choose a best bit! Dunking the staff in the river and sods were hilarious though - especially sgt Manson washing CI Tucker's feet!

the thursday was by far the best. bridge building, river crossing, thunder storm with lots o lightning, swimming in the VERY muddy and murky river, and the entire red arrows display team fly by. that was the ultimate day.

errrrrm.. haha so many. the 2 flt bundle was good. minus the neck and leg pain afterwards. and getting hyper on lovehearts. awos gossip column. fitting howell into 28" cordrouys. I use the term "fitting" loosely here. people in general.. sods etc etc

hello guys, to make all those who didnt go on camp jelous lets post our favourite and funniest moments!! i think everybody doing drill in the river ws good, including the dunking of the AWO before hand!!

30/06/06 - Bramshill Exe

FS Scott and I were patrolling around the woods when we saw one cadet walking across the open woodland.. he saw us(the enemy), hesitated.. then continued to walk. We thought we'd be nice and let him be. then his friend (who we hadn't seen) stood up and followed him! seeing as we could only capture them in pairs we set off into the woods to 'reprimand' them. THEN a third man popped up and followed them, in his oh-so-camo blue jeans. They stopped for a while and we eventually caught up with them. I proceeded to enlighten our young friends on the basic fieldcraft POA on seeing an enemy and the meaning of 'small target' and 'movement'. Whereupon FS Scott continued the lecture by talking to somebody behind me, so I turned around and realised Boulton and Mayne were hidden in the pile of fallen branches behind me! just 1m away and I hadn't noticed them. So I promptly drew my conclusion by explaining how NOT to give away the location of your OPs.. pretending I'd spotted their OP the whole time. Good OP ladies...

24-25/06/06 – Wing challenge

4th out of 24 squadrons! What a fantastic result (considering we had to enter an all girls scratch team). Well done everyone! A really fun weekend, with super weather and great team spirit which got us through the night in the Bivvy hotel! Also, lots of compliments from other officers on our drill and behaviour in general! Go team!

12/06/06

Welcome to the new recruits to 1116 Woodley Sqn, who on their first night were in the parade and "fishing"

10/06/06

Well done to the Cadets who braved the heat to recruit at the carnival, a successfully day, with a simple but effective stall!

12/03/06

Wing 5-aside – a fun day with lots of noise from 1116

05/03/06 - Wing Hockey

3 girls from Woodley went; Flt Sgt Sach, Sgt Parfitt and Cpl Carpenter. We came 3rd over all! It was good fun and everyone who went enjoyed themselves.

Wing Rugby – unfortunately only 8 out of the original 24 players arrived, but 1116 was NOT one of the sqn's to let the wing down, with Cpl Dempsey being one of the 8 reliable players selected for wing.

16/01/06 – Promotions!

Cdt Adams, Cdt Carpenter, Cdt Dempsey, Cdt Martin, Cdt Manson and Cdt Wielogorska have now been promoted to the rank of Cpl, and Cpl Parfitt and Steer to Sgt!

17/12/05 – Christmas party

13/11/05 – Remembrance Parade

02/10/05 – Regional drill

25/09/05 – Wing field day

23-30th July 2005 – Camp – RAF Marham

Well what a packed event, from the words “off the bus” to “we are home”, nobody’s feet touched the ground!! Flying, Shooting, Section visits, Air shows, Go carting and much, much more! The only way you will find out

just how good camp was is to talk to those that went!! Go on do it now!!

9-10th July 2005 - Wing Challenge

A fun weekend by everyone's standards. 19 cadet teams and an amazing staff support led to an action packed 48 hours of non-stop team exercises, late night hospital trips and early morning reveilles! Activities spanned a wide variety, including mind boggling puzzles, challenging confidence courses and plenty of running around in the July sun on crazy man hunts and carrying field gun equipment! A Night Ex separated Saturday and Sunday, and a church service ended the themed weekend in memory of those who gave their services and lives in the 60th anniversary of the end of WWII.

13th July 2005 - .22 Training

This extra parade night saw 3 WHTs renewed ready for summer camp

whilst 5 other individuals continued or started their lessons.

July 2005 – Goodbye to Cdt Owen

Goodbye to Cadet Owen who has timed out and has to leave! Good luck from the Sqn!!

20th June  – Sqn Water Fight!!

This was a great fun night for all! Pop over to the Sqn forum for some of the funny moments!

11th June  – Carnival March & Recruit

It was Hot, Hot, Hot! – 4 miles felt like 10! But as usual chins stayed high and arms were strait resulting in a very smart march, which many came over and commented on. Followed by recruitment that hopefully we will receive some positive results from!

10th June  – Carnival Fence Set-up

The Sqn thanks all those hard workers who turned out to set up the carnival fences and we were all impressed with your speedy way of working!

June  – Carnival Preparations

Good luck to all those parading with the Woodley carnival watch out for the report here soon!

18th May  – WI Training

Cadet Adams and Cadet Martin have been the first to complete the Mark 8 .22 rifle training – hope to see them on the range soon!!

16th May  – A New CWO

Well done to FS Quilter who has gained the dizzy heights of CWO! Watch out cadets as he’s on a mission!!

9th May  – Out With The Old And In With The New

CWO Tucker had his last official parade night with 1116 as a cadet! A presentation was made to Tucker for his outstanding service to the Sqn over at least 7 years!! But all is not lost, as he has decided to continue his service to the Sqn as a Civilian instructor! But in with the new as four new cadets have joined us and have completed their service in the RTF culminating in a passing out parade in which there parents were able to watch.

8th May  – Wing Athletics

A fun and enjoyable day for all the 22 Woodley cadets that attended competing in field and track events. We collected over 15 medals with the continuous support of yet again the noisiest Sqn and staff! And made a clean sweep of the female trophies. Well done to the three new female cadets, on their first wing event, we couldn't have beaten undisputed Chipping Norton to the overall females' trophy without you!

22nd to 24th April – Exe Strike Force!

Cadets visited RAF High Wycombe, which for many was there first ATC event off Squadron. A hugely popular weekend, which saw us blowing up bases in the night exercise to fast and furious capture the flag games.

28th March – Exe Secret Bunker

Cadets dropping bombs on the wrong target (hospital) or getting mauled by zombies. With canteen in the dark and Special Forces attacking constantly the cadets managed to provide solutions to all the problems thrown at them!

24th March – Belated well done to Cadet Martin

Cadet Martin successfully pasted his gliding scholarship in just 7 ¾ hours. Again well done from all!

14th and 18th March 2005 – Exe Moving Forces

Thanks to FS Quilter who has run the Sqns first two night exe. Enjoyably linked were recon tasks followed by an attacking night exe. What’s next FS?

13th March 2005 - Five a side team wins us the plate!

For the first time in Sqn memory we achieved a place in the Thames Valley Wing five a side football tournament! After a very hard fort and at times controversial (like playing ourselves!?) we finally succeeded in a ranking place. As usual 1116 was the noisiest there which I am sure the wing commander liked to see as he was standing just behind us!

10th March 2005 - Section Commanders Training part 1 - Theory

The theory has been completed and covered a broad area of Adventure Training. Command and control and section tactics were but a few. These Cadets and NCO's can now look forward to SCT part 2, which will see them, attacking enemy government personnel as covertly as possible! – Picture is available in the gallery.

8th March 2005 - Cadet Manson flies solo!
